Process Paper
The topic we chose for National History Day is how 9/11 was a turning point in history. We’ve previously learned about this topic and we both find it very interesting. 9/11 was a very serious and horrifying time in history and most people don’t know what fully happened that day. We both thought it would be a good idea to teach and inform people what actually happened on that tragic day.
For our research, we found books on Osama bin Laden, 9/11, The Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Somerset, Pennsylvania. We read the books, took notes, and then found websites. We reviewed each website carefully to make sure it was what we needed. Also, we made sure it covered the information we wanted to talk about. After reading the books and the websites we recorded them all on a piece of paper. We then went through, citing the sources we wanted to use in our project, and putting them into an Annotated Bibliography.
For the selection of our project, we decided to go with a website. We chose this because we thought it would be the easiest way to get the information across. We thought it would be the easiest way for people to understand what we were teaching about, and it is more fun to look at than a piece of paper with words. We are both more on the creative side and thought it would be fun for us to create. Websites are more often used when needed for research. The information is presented easier and more interactive. For the creation of our project, we started by finding a program where we could create an easy to use website. We finally found Weebly.com. It’s a very user friendly way to create your own website. This website made it easy for us to incorporate all of the topics we were going to talk about into the homepage. Also, we wanted to branch off from the homepage, giving each topic its own page. We started with the most talked about event on that day: The Twin Towers. Next, we talked about the Pentagon. Last, we talked about Somerset, Pennsylvania. For each page we went into deeper detail about each tragedy so people can become more aware of what actually happened that day, and why it was a turning point in history.
Our topic fits the theme for 2013 very well. It fits because 9/11 changed the way people see things and each other. People nowadays look at people differently then we used to. People are now scared that anyone they don’t know could be a possible threat. Also, airport security is much stricter than it used to be. Before 9/11 people could just walk onto airplanes. Now, things have changed and we have all kinds of security before we step onto the plane. 9/11 is definitely a turning point in history for all of these reasons and more.
